The Missouri State Capitol
The dome over the Missouri River is the first thing you see coming into town, and folks here never quite get over it. Guided tours take you through the rotunda, the House and Senate chambers, and the Thomas Hart Benton mural up in the House Lounge. That mural is what most people come for, and it earns it. The Missouri State Museum is in the same building, and both are free.
The Missouri State Penitentiary
A few blocks east of the Capitol sits a prison that opened in 1836 and did not close until 2004, the oldest continuously operating prison west of the Mississippi in its day. History tours walk the cell blocks; the ghost tours go after dark and are exactly as unsettling as you are hoping. Book ahead, because people come from out of state for this one.
Jefferson Landing State Historic Site
The riverfront block that was the town's steamboat landing, including the Lohman Building and the Union Hotel, now interpreted as a state historic site. It is a short walk from the Capitol and it is where the city actually started.
The Governor's Mansion
The 1871 Renaissance Revival mansion on Madison Street is a working residence that opens for public tours, plus seasonal candlelight tours around the holidays.
Runge Conservation Nature Center
Missouri Department of Conservation nature center on the west side, with indoor exhibits, an aquarium, and several miles of trail through woods and prairie. Free, family-oriented, and it runs constant public programming, most of which shows up on this site's calendar.
The Katy Trail
The state's cross-Missouri rail trail runs along the north bank of the river. North Jefferson City is a trailhead, reachable by the pedestrian bridge, and it is the reason a lot of cyclists stop in town at all.
Downtown and High Street
The compact downtown grid holds most of the city's independent shops, bars and restaurants, the Capitol block, and the festivals and markets that periodically close the street to cars.
Binder Park and the city park system
