What it is
Race to the Dome is a canoe and kayak race down the Missouri River to Jefferson City. Paddlers pick one of two courses: 15.8 miles from Hartsburg, or 27.6 miles from the Providence access near Columbia. The finish is at Noren Access, with the dome in the background behind the bridge.
Missouri River Relief hosts it, and the proceeds go to the group's work connecting people to the river through cleanups, education and recreation. The race started with a Jefferson City man, Patrick Lynn, who was inspired after watching the MR340 and partnered with River Relief to start it.
2026 was the 17th race. In 2025, 204 paddlers in 148 boats came from 10 states and paddled 4,426 miles between them.
What to expect
It is a friendly first race. Finish times usually run about two to four hours, and veterans steer newer paddlers to the shorter Hartsburg course.
Canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards all race, in classes like mixed tandem and solo kayak.
The leaders reach Noren Access in mid-morning (around 10:45 a.m. in 2025), and finishers are met with a cowbell, food and drinks.
Good to know
- Lifejackets are required, and alcohol is not allowed on the race.
- To watch the finish, go to Noren Access. Families spread out on the grass there in 2025 while the boats came in.
