What it is

Salute to America is how Jefferson City does the Fourth of July: a free, all-day celebration downtown with a parade on High Street, a concert on the Capitol's main stage, a classic car show, a kids' zone, food and a beer garden, and then fireworks over the Capitol dome.

Its organizers call it Mid-Missouri's largest Independence Day celebration, and the crowds back them up. Thousands lined High Street for the 2026 parade, and in 2018, when the celebration was spread over several days, Missourinet reported that total attendance could reach 50,000.

The finale is the Red, White and Boom Sky Concert, billed as one of the largest fireworks displays in the state. In 2026 it was a 400-shell show of more than 15 minutes, set to patriotic music on NASH FM 100.1.

What to expect

The day opens with a patriotic ceremony at the Capitol honoring the community's heroes; in 2026 it started at 10 a.m. The classic car cruise parks on the north side of the Capitol.

The parade has usually stepped off at 4 p.m.; in 2026 it moved to 6 p.m. Each year has its own theme: Blooming Through the Ages in 2025, United We Bloom in 2026.

A headliner plays the Capitol main stage in the evening. Grand Ole Opry member Chris Janson headlined in 2026; The Mixtapes and Eastern Heights had the main stage in 2025.

In 2026 the celebration started the night before at the Capital Region Amphitheater, with live music, food trucks, kids' activities and a hot air balloon glow.

Good to know

  • Bring lawn chairs or blankets. There is room on the Capitol lawn to sit, picnic and watch, but seating is limited.
  • It is July. Organizers ask people to keep drinking water, and to bring empty refillable bottles to the amphitheater events.
  • In 2024 the fireworks were set up on the far side of the Missouri River, and pedestrian access on the Missouri River Bridge and Adrian's Island closed during the show.
  • Leave your own fireworks at home: city code prohibits fireworks inside city limits, with exceptions for professional shows like this one.
  • If storms roll in, police follow the National Weather Service and steer people to shelter spots mapped out ahead of time. In 2026 a thunderstorm briefly called off the parade and damaged the main stage; the parade went on, and so did the fireworks.

Past years

  • 2026Saturday, July 4, 2026July 3 and 4. Chris Janson on the Capitol main stage; a thunderstorm paused the parade, which went on.

  • 2024Thursday, July 4, 2024Opened at 2 p.m. at the Capitol, opening ceremony at 5, fireworks at 9:45.
  • 2018July 2018Spread over several days, with 17 city blocks of themed areas and seven entertainment stages on July 4.
