This presentation provides a framework for improving tree planting success by focusing on three core concepts: site considerations, species selection aligned with landowner goals and site constraints, and early establishment care. From an urban forestry perspective, we will examine how soil conditions, light availability, and water resources influence tree planting success, and how site limitations shape long-term outcomes. We will also discuss how species characteristics and growth forms fit within the surrounding landscape and architecture, and how thoughtfully matching trees to site conditions can reduce mortality and maintenance costs while improving energy efficiency and enhancing property value. This session, led by Ryan Gross, Assistant Forester for the Columbia Regional Center of the Missouri Department of Conservation, also emphasizes the often-overlooked importance of post-planting care, including proper watering, mulching, and pruning.
