Our Missouri Capitol is surrounded by sculptures that symbolize and allegorize the characteristics of our state. Sculpture is one of the oldest forms of human expression. In the 1800’s, women were especially drawn to sculpture as their chosen art form. Two women from Missouri achieved success in this area: Lavinia “Vinnie” Ream and Bessie Potter Vonnoh. Both achieved “firsts” as women, both are recognized as significant American artists.
